Dear teachers, today I observed in a butylene isomerization plant that many heat exchangers were of vertical type; several of them had heat transfer oil indicated as the medium used. I would like to ask about the advantages and disadvantages of vertical heat exchangers compared to horizontal ones Why is a vertical heat exchanger used in this device?
It’s just that vertical heat exchangers take up less space.
This is related to the layout orientation of the entire process.
Is that all? Is it about how much space it takes? Heating effect? Piping layout? What about the arrangement of the tube and shell sides? Is there no big difference?
The pipeline layout and the arrangement of the tube side and shell side are generally closely related to the on-site process conditions； As for the heat exchange efficiency, the difference should not be very large. It’s just that for heat exchangers with longer lengths, more considerations are required in the design when they are installed vertically. The structural design will definitely be different as well.
