Hello everyone: I have a question – we are planning to build a triphenyl storage area for benzene, toluene, and xylene. This area will consist of 6 storage tanks, all used for storing triphenyl. There is a tricky issue at the moment: the designers are divided on whether to install oil and gas recovery systems. The safety supervision department refuses to allow such systems to be installed around the triphenyl tank area, while environmental protection requirements mandate their installation. It’s very difficult to decide what to do; I would appreciate it if some of the professional experts here could provide guidance. Specifically, it’s unclear whether these systems are necessary or not. If they are indeed required, what are the specified safety distances for the storage tanks and pump houses? How can these requirements be met simultaneously? I hope the experts can offer some advice, or even point me to the relevant regulations. Thank you very much. :)
Under the current strict environmental protection requirements, waste gas recovery is essential. The safety authorities didn’t say it must not be done; only that a safety assessment is required.
Although I still don’t know how to solve this problem directly, I would like to thank you anyway. At the moment, the formal design drawings haven’t been prepared yet, so I want to finalize things before those drawings are ready; otherwise, it will remain a problem once construction starts, and making changes will be very troublesome. :)

wudidoudou: The requirements for safety distance can be found in the specifications. May I ask if for triphenyl, three separate sets of tests need to be conducted, one for each of the three materials? Or share the same set? How did the design institute think about this? What if sharing the gas phase portion causes pollution?

Dear teachers and experts, it’s definitely necessary to have a recovery system now; there’s no doubt about that. There are two tanks for triphenyls each in Tank Area 3, making a total of 6 tanks. According to the guidelines and regulations issued by the environmental protection and safety supervision authorities in 2014, it is required to have such a system for environmental reasons. However, Document No. 3[2014]68 issued by the Safety Supervision Authority explicitly states that the practice of using multiple storage tanks connected together through exhaust gas systems must be stopped immediately. The question now is: what kind of recovery system should be installed to meet these requirements? I hope the teachers can offer some guidance. After all, it’s not possible to have a separate recovery system for each tank, right? Hehe.
You mentioned six tanks, but didn’t specify their size; so it’s unknown what the evaporation rate is Should it be recycled separately? If the evaporation rate is not high, I recommend using an activated carbon adsorption system directly

Among the benzene vapor recovery projects in China, the largest one at present is the 2000 m3/h benzene vapor recovery project at Yantai Wanhua’s benzene storage area. The performance is also excellent, with basically zero emissions.
