I would like to ask why blind flanges are installed on both the inlet and outlet pipelines of the cold box?

Inside the cold box is a plate-fin heat exchanger; before the unit is put into operation or during major maintenance, during the pipeline purging phase, blind flanges or short pipes are used to bypass the inlet and outlet of the cold box, with the aim of preventing large particles from entering the plate-fin heat exchanger and blocking the flow channels. After the pipeline has been purged, the blind flange can be removed, and the pipeline can be connected to carry out tasks such as airtightness testing and gas displacement. Generally, for the inlets and outlets of cold boxes, temporary plugs are used during transportation to the site after the cold box has been manufactured.

The cryogenic tank is used to achieve low-temperature separation, and the installation of blind flanges at the inlet and outlet is intended to allow the system to be disconnected from the equipment. What was said on the 5th floor is very clear; to add a bit more, the cryogenic tank is sensitive to water – water ingress can cause the equipment and pipes to freeze and crack, so it’s essential to prevent any wash water from entering. Blind flanges are the safest solution.
