Our company has developed a new product with a working pressure of 0.6 Mpa; it has 6 pressure stages, and it’s equipped with an air storage tank with dimensions of 400×1000. Currently, an additional air storage tank has been installed between the air compressor and this equipment. However, I noticed that there is no safety valve on this storage tank. When I asked the seller, they said that air storage tanks used with air compressors don’t come equipped with safety valves. I would like to ask: First, do air storage tanks used with air compressors indeed not have safety valves? Under what circumstances can an air storage tank be without a safety valve? II. Is it necessary to have a two-piece unit (filter and pressure regulator) in front of the air storage tank, and under what circumstances can it be omitted? III. If the inlet and outlet diameters of a gas storage tank are different, which one should be larger: the inlet diameter or the outlet diameter? Thank you all
1. Does the air storage tank used for air compressors come without a safety valve? Under what circumstances can a storage tank do without a safety valve? Pressure vessels should be equipped with safety valves; our unit’s compressed air storage tanks have safety valves. II. Is it necessary to have a two-piece unit (filter and pressure regulator) in front of the air storage tank, and under what circumstances can it be omitted? It is not necessary to use a two-piece fitting for connecting to the air storage tank; a two-piece fitting should be used for the air supply to pneumatic instruments.
Thank you for your advice. If a pressure relief valve is not used, how can we ensure that the pressure inside the air tank does not exceed the operating pressure? If the pressure in the tank is relieved only by a safety valve, then when the inlet pressure is high, won’t the safety valve have to keep releasing air continuously?
Don’t air compressors have a pressure setting? Automatic unloading or venting in case of overpressure.

If this air storage tank is connected to the air supply line, then a pressure regulator is necessary; for example, if the pressure in the main air supply line is 1.0 Mpa, but I only need 0.6 Mpa here. I also have another question: we want to install a safety valve using a three-way connector, and I’m not sure whether it’s better to place it at the inlet or at the outlet. Thank you
Does the air tank serve as a buffer?
I think similar to what was said on the 6th floor – that middle part is probably used to buffer pressure fluctuations. In that case, if there is overpressure, simply relieve the pressure from the new product side. Moreover, if there is overpressure, it should be the new product that first triggers an overpressure alarm.
Most air compressors come equipped with an automatic interlock function; you just need to set a minimum loading pressure and a maximum unloading pressure. The air compressor pressure is automatically maintained between the two values
The design pressure of the gas storage tank should be set to that value. If users need to relieve stress, they can do so on their own
