I want to know how a water ring vacuum pump works. I’ve never seen one before; after reading some information, I still can’t figure out how the intake and exhaust processes work, especially regarding the intake and exhaust ports. Won’t the sealing fluid get carried away?
The structural feature of the water ring vacuum pump is that a star-shaped impeller, which is eccentric with respect to the cylindrical pump casing, is mounted on the pump shaft; before starting, water is filled into the pump to a specified level. As the impeller rotates, centrifugal force throws the water against the four walls of the pump chamber, forming a water ring that is concentric with the shaft. The inner surface of the upper part of this water ring is in contact with the wheel housing, while the inner surface of the lower part forms an air chamber with the wheel housing. The volume of this air chamber increases in the right half; in the front half, a vacuum is created as the volume between the wheel housing and the water ring increases. As a result, air is drawn into the vacuum pump through the suction pipe and the crescent-shaped inlet located on the end cover of the vacuum pump’s casing ; In the second half of the cycle, as the volume between the wheel housing and the water ring decreases, the air is compressed and discharged through another crescent-shaped exhaust port on the pump housing cover. As the impeller keeps rotating, the water ring vacuum pump can draw out the air
The working fluid is carried away, so a steam separator is usually installed, and regular refilling of the fluid is required. What we use most often these days is a closed-loop system (with low corrosivity) + solenoid valves for automatic water addition and removal
