What is the role of anti-surge devices in centrifugal compressors, and how are they operated? Is their effect the same when used for long periods of time as compared to short periods? I would appreciate a system overview; thank you

Anti-surge function operates like a circuit: when the outlet pressure is high or the inlet gas flow decreases, this can cause gas backflow and result in surge. But is there a difference between surge occurring over a long period of time and one that occurs over a short period? Additionally, can surge be used to regulate flow rate and pressure?
Manually opening the anti-surge valve allows for adjustment of the gas flow rate, but it is not economical; it is generally used as a backup method in addition to adjusting the compressor speed or using inlet throttling.
