What is a motor protector? Which standard specifies the relevant requirements?

Well, a question for a beginner. Is a motor protector the same as what is commonly referred to as a comprehensive motor protector? It is mainly used to protect the motor against short circuits, overloads, stall conditions, phase loss/unbalance, overvoltage, undervoltage, leakage current/zero sequence faults, etc. If not, then what is the difference between the two? Also, in terms of protection mechanisms, are short circuits and leakage current the same thing? Is overload the same as normal thermal protection? Furthermore, what kind of motors require motor protectors? **Are there any mandatory requirements in the standards or IEC specifications?
The Siemens low-voltage cabinets I use are equipped with motor protectors for the pumps (15KW).
