In water-coal slurry gasification, why is a flow-limiting orifice plate installed in the coal slurry return line? The general function of such an orifice plate is to regulate pressure and limit flow. It seems unnecessary to install one in this case; as long as the flow rate from the coal slurry pump meets the requirements, the slurry can return to the large storage tank.
The flow-limiting orifice plate is used to establish the back pressure during startup.
This flow control orifice plate doesn’t serve only to regulate flow; its main function is to ensure that there is a certain pressure in the coal slurry pipeline before feeding begins. More precisely, this pressure is around 1.1–1.6 times higher than the pressure in the gasifier, and it serves as a backpressure. This is closely related to the timing at which the coal slurry enters the furnace.
The flow control orifice plate is used for restricting flow; it can be removed if a valve is installed.
