During that period, the cycle of carbon as a fuel was in balance. Since the invention of the steam engine, large quantities of fossil fuels such as coal and oil have been mined on a wide scale; this carbon may have formed in ancient times, and its distribution might have been suitable for the balance that existed at that time. After fossil fuels are extracted, large amounts of carbon are taken out from deep underground; through various processes, this carbon turns into CO2, disrupting the existing carbon balance and thereby causing the greenhouse effect.
