Due to the persistently low oil prices, and in order to enhance the competitiveness of our products in the market and increase profits, at the request of the manufacturer, we converted a 200,000-ton/year gasoline and diesel hydrogenation unit in Shandong’s local refining facility into a 100,000-ton carbon-9 hydrogenation unit; the raw material for this unit is C9 produced through the cracking process in ethylene plants, which is used to manufacture aromatic solvent oils. The main use of aromatic solvent oils is as solvents for paints and coatings. Previously, xylene was the main solvent used for paints and coatings. Since around the 1990s, with the development and introduction of aromatic solvent oils in China, these oils have gradually taken over the market alongside mixed xylene. The domestic paint and coating market is gradually expanding. On the one hand, mixed xylene is a key raw material for polyesters; on the other hand, since aromatic solvent oils are cheaper than xylene, and their boiling points are higher than those of xylene, resulting in a slower rate of evaporation, the paints and coatings produced with these oils exhibit better flow properties and brightness. This is especially evident when used for high-quality baking coatings. Additionally, aromatic solvent oils can be used to produce products of various grades. Therefore, it is an inevitable trend for aromatic solvent oils to replace xylene. According to statistics from the paint industry, solvents account for about 50% of the total amount used in paint production, with aromatic solvents making up 30% to 40% of that total. Heavy aromatic solvent oils account for over 40% of the market share in the aromatic solvents sector, with an annual consumption of around 150,000 tons. At present, China’s construction industry and automotive sector are in a period of rapid development, resulting in a high demand for solvents used in paints and coatings.
