1) Currently, the finished gasoline produced by refineries is composed of a mixture of various distillates, but its octane rating is generally determined through experiments. Is it possible to calculate the octane ratings of each type of oil as well as that of the mixture? 2) Generally, which properties of the oil are used for estimation, such as its structure, molecular weight, density, composition, or something else? 3) What level of error in the calculation is considered acceptable? Octane number cannot be predicted. It can be calculated using empirical formulas based on mass spectrometry analysis and near-infrared analysis data.
If the octane numbers of the various components used in gasoline blending are known, it is possible to predict the octane number of the blended gasoline. Although there is no linear additive relationship for octane number adjustment, it can still be estimated using a linear relationship along with empirical values. Otherwise, how could gasoline blending plans be developed? There is a discrepancy between the calculation results and those obtained through harmonic analysis; a difference of up to 0.5 in octane rating is generally considered normal. Otherwise, if manual calculations gave exactly the same results as those from an octane rating machine, why would anyone still spend millions on such a machine?
