Technology for producing high-quality needle coke from low-quality oil slurry has been developed

On November 18, the Sinopec “Ten Dragon” scientific research project, “Development and Industrial Application of Technologies for Producing High-Quality Acicular Coke from Low-Quality Oil Slurry,” in which Sinopec Engineering Construction Co., Ltd. participated and was responsible for the engineering design, passed its evaluation. This indicates that Sinopec has mastered the entire production process from low-quality oil slurry to high-quality needle coke, becoming the world’s first company to produce needle coke from such low-quality oil slurry. It thus provides a solution for refineries to handle and make comprehensive use of low-quality catalytic oil slurry. This project was carried out jointly by Sinopec Engineering Construction Co., Ltd., Shanghai Petrochemical, the Petroleum Research Institute, and the Refining and Sales Company. Laboratory research and industrial trials were conducted on the production of needle coke from catalytic slurry, and on July 13, the first batch of needle coke was produced in Unit 1 of the delayed coking plant at Shanghai Petrochemical. As verified by the international authority Swiss R&D Carbon, the thermal expansion coefficients of the two batches of raw coke products produced by Sinopec after graphitization meet the standards of high-quality oil-based needle coke on the international scale. To date, 16 domestic patents have been applied for under this project, with 2 already granted.
The experimental setup developed by Shandong Yida Technology completed its tests successfully.
It seems that there is not much market space for such large volumes of slurry; its application is still in its early stages, and it is likely not to be transferred to others.
