It’s not easy for instrument technicians in chemical plants in the north! A heavy snowfall kept us busy for several days. The technician joked that it’s only in winter that one realizes the importance of instruments, and I said, You’re wrong; it’s only in winter that one understands how busy instrument technicians are. Hehe. Let’s all share our experiences on preventing the dashboard from freezing in winter. Let me mention one thing first: if the working fluid used for hydrogen production freezes, do not use steam to blow it – this will melt the aromatics, and anthraquinone sticking inside will make cleaning even more difficult. We cleaned the on-site level gauge by using an iron bar.
Electric heat tracing is a great solution; don’t risk freezing the pipes just to save a little money
Steam tracing works well, but it’s prone to leaks
There’s no other good solution; the simplest approach is to conduct more inspections, so as to avoid more trouble if the gauge freezes.
Bring all the on-line transmitter temperatures into the room for continuous monitoring
