We just replaced the compressor packing and oil scraper rings today, but after starting the machine, smoke began to come out shortly thereafter. I’m not sure what the problem is; it’s a D-type compressor. There is no pressure-reducing ring in the packing, as it wasn’t included in the original design. During installation, there was a radial ring and a tangential ring inside the packing box, with the radial ring facing the side under pressure. The installation was done correctly. Could someone please explain why smoke is being produced? Our stuffing box does not have a cooling device.
Is it cooking fumes or something else? If there is a nitrogen filling pipeline, check whether it is unobstructed
I think it’s cooking fumes; we don’t have nitrogen protection here either – it’s just a single packing box
Is it possible that the oil wiper rings don’t clean the oil thoroughly, allowing it to enter the packing? The area where the piston rod contacts the packing is at a relatively high temperature, and when this area comes into contact with engine oil, smoke is generated. Is such a scenario possible? Is there any air leakage recovery? If so, check whether the air leakage recovery pipeline is unobstructed
I’m not sure if your packing rings are from the same batch as those that were replaced Is the waterway open? During installation, are the radial and axial clearances of each sealing ring in compliance with the regulations? Is the opening gap within the required range? Is the piston rod worn? Is the piston suffering from severe settlement? Since smoke is coming out, I’ll open it first to take a look; I think it will be clear at a glance.
No, it’s just a simple stuffing box that contains packing and oil-scraping rings and things like that. I guess the quality of those oil-scraping rings might be poor, so they can’t clean the oil properly, which allows oil to get into the packing. It’s caused by high temperatures; I think it’s due to oil fumes, and definitely high oil temperatures are to blame. The oil is only present in the crankcase, and the only way it can get there is through the piston rod. In other words, it’s because the oil-scraping function isn’t effective enough
They are not from the same batch; the previous ones were original, while the later ones were replaced with ones from another manufacturer to save money. They don’t have any internal fluid channels – there’s just a single packing box containing the packing and the oil-scraping ring, with no other accessories. What you say is not impossible either; hasn’t it been taken down yet? If you’re not sure, it’s better to take it apart and check. The compressor isn’t something to be taken lightly – if the temperature gets too high, the piston rod can be damaged. I also think it’s a problem with the sealing ring – the gap isn’t large enough, which causes expansion, seizure, and heating. No matter what the problem is, give an answer after solving it.
