I have been working for 5 years; in the first 2 years, I worked on small projects for a foreign company in the oil industry, figuring out the processes and piping systems on my own, while relying on other engineers for electrical and civil engineering tasks. Later, I switched to a foreign company in the fine chemicals industry to work on new projects. I was the only Chinese member of the project team; I worked alongside a group of foreigners to carry out preliminary design tasks and handle matters related to project cost estimates, etc. After five years, it feels like I’ve been doing everything, but I’m not very proficient in anything. Now the new project here has failed, and after the New Year I plan to switch to another foreign company to continue working on projects and carrying out factory upgrades. But once the renovation is done, I’m not sure how it will transform or what will happen next. The New Year is approaching, and I feel quite melancholic; I would like to seek advice from experienced seniors.
You’re doing too many different tasks; then just keep doing those miscellaneous jobs, and eventually you’ll be able to become a project manager.
One needs to set their own career plan for this. Decide in which direction to move after conducting self-analysis.
