Clause 5.3.1 of the \"Code for Safe Design of Spherical Storage Tanks for Liquefied Hydrocarbons\" SH3136-2003 stipulates that spherical storage tanks for liquefied hydrocarbons shall be equipped with local and remote level gauges, but glass plate level gauges should not be used. I would like to ask everyone: Why are glass plate level gauges not suitable for use in spherical storage tanks for liquefied hydrocarbons? ”
It might be because of the concern that glass cannot withstand pressure.
It’s not easy to see clearly, and there are risks involved (the junction between glass and metal does not meet the standards for pressure vessels, and it’s also a location where fires and explosions can occur). Moreover, radar level gauges can be used for remote monitoring; since magnetic flap level gauges work well for local monitoring, there’s no reason to use glass panels. In terms of cost, glass panels are also more expensive than magnetic flap level gauges
That’s exactly right; aside from anything else, glass panels are not suitable for use in pressure vessels at the very least.
Level gauges based on the principle of communicating vessels often exhibit an artificially high liquid level in such storage tanks, mainly due to uneven heating of the individual components.
