Gratitude Story 001: The Unforgettable Shark Meat – I had just started working and was a green, inexperienced young man. People say you need to maintain a good relationship with your master, otherwise he will hold back! I just want to bring some local specialties from my hometown for the master. I didn’t know what to buy either; when I saw shark meat, I thought this master must have never eaten it before! Then I bought a few bags and brought them here from afar. But when I went to the master’s house, I said, “This is shark meat; give it a try!” The master opened it and took a bite – why is it so fishy! I took a bite too; it was really fishy. I said maybe that’s just the taste of shark meat; actually, I’ve never eaten it either. Then the master picked up the packaging bag and took a close look at it, before smiling after a while. How to eat—it needs to be steamed for 10 minutes! I scratched my head and chuckled! Not long ago, I asked my master if he still remembered shark meat! The master said, “Bring 2 more bags!”

The only person I called a mentor was my first supervisor at work; he was good at playing Go and Gomoku, and had excellent handwriting. He also published several articles in the factory newspaper, written in complex language that I could hardly understand. At that time, Shift 4 operated on a three-shift system; the workers on the middle shift and night shift would mostly just go to sleep. Yet this master turned out to be promising; when our city’s economic television station was looking for journalists, he applied and was hired. It was around twenty years ago. I know that some of my old colleagues who changed careers over the years hold gatherings every year; I’ve heard a lot about him as well. He seems to be a notable person who is doing well in life. He graduated from high school in the 1980s, and at least one of his parents is a university professor. Getting back to the point: It seems good to have a good instructor who is willing to teach you and guide you, but sometimes it’s also fine to encounter an instructor who is lazy and doesn’t teach or guide you, forcing you to find your own ways, to practice, to experience things, to innovate, and to draw conclusions. This is my impression of my only team leader; I only served as one for one and a half years. In any case, he has expressed his trust in me on many occasions – trust in someone who is a university graduate. He is still serving as the team leader, and has been in that role for over twenty years. Usually, he is rather lazy and not inclined to learn new skills or manage people effectively. However, he never cares too much about trivial matters, never competes for honors, never does anything malicious against others, and never deliberately causes trouble for his superiors. Yet in critical situations, he turns out to be an absolutely dependable team leader. We sometimes call him the “lucky star” of our workshop; he also has another nickname that isn’t used very often – “Big Understander” – because he truly understands many things, whether it’s related to society, operations, or lessons learned from experience. On the contrary, some masters are too cautious and never dare to let their apprentices work on their own; as a result, such apprentices tend to be hesitant and find it difficult to be innovative. Moreover, as the saying goes, among any three people, there is always one I can learn from; and there are many similar stories of those who are not the masters of their own masters.

The new bamboo shoots rise higher than the old ones, all thanks to the support of the old trunk! Next year, when new students arrive, ten-zhang dragon descendants will surround the phoenix pool! ---I will never forget my teacher’s kindness!
