What measures can be taken to reduce ammonia nitrogen in wastewater treatment?
Ammonia nitrogen can be removed using the AO method: ammonia nitrogen is oxidized to nitrate nitrogen by nitrifying bacteria under aerobic conditions, thereby removing ammonia nitrogen; meanwhile, total nitrogen is removed by denitrifying bacteria, which reduce nitrate nitrogen to nitrogen gas or nitrogen oxides.
Biological methods are effective in removing ammonia nitrogen, capable of reducing its levels to below 5 ppm. Common processes include A2O, AO, SBR, oxidation ditches, and CASS; the traditional activated sludge process is less effective in removing ammonia nitrogen compared to these other methods.
Our company’s wastewater treatment process includes oil separation, air flotation, anaerobic reactors, aerobic treatment, aeration, and sedimentation. Currently, the ammonia nitrogen level in the water before these treatment steps is low (below 20), but it becomes higher after those steps (around 40). Please analyze the reasons for this.
If biochemical treatment is feasible, use AO; if the concentration is too high and biochemical treatment isn’t effective, then ammonia evaporation or stripping is required
