I started elementary school in 1980; at that time, the homeroom teacher was a math teacher named Teacher Xia, who left a deep impression on me. I remember that she became my homeroom teacher in the second grade of elementary school. Her daughter was not in our class; she was in Class 1, while I was in Class 2. This math teacher’s attitude toward teaching and her teaching methods served as an example for many teachers today, and they had a lasting impact on my academic career as well as my professional life over the years that followed. My elementary school math teacher was one of the district’s outstanding teachers at that time; our class was also considered an outstanding class in the district. Several days each month, teachers from other schools would come to visit our class. There were several math tests held on a monthly basis. As I recall, many students in our class scored 100 points, with hardly any scoring below 90 points. Few students scored below 95 points, and 70% of them scored 98 points or higher. This is why I did well in math, physics, and chemistry later on as well. The teacher has a rather unique teaching method: for many examples, she asks us to write out our problem-solving approaches on the blackboard first. She also writes various types of questions on paper using a brush, allowing us to work on them repeatedly until the quantity and quality meet her standards. I was the most careless student back then, and she would always encourage me, saying that I was the smartest but that carelessness was holding me back. She would remind me that during the college entrance exams, a single mistake due to carelessness could mean that there would be more people in the whole country who scored higher than me. So for every exam, I would answer the questions carefully and double-check my calculations, fearing that mistakes in calculation might cost me points. My elementary school teacher helped me develop good study habits and a rigorous attitude toward learning, which accompanied me as I was admitted to a top high school and my ideal university. After graduating from university, a few of us former classmates went to see our teacher. She still remembered us, saying that we were the group of students she had taught during her most experienced and energetic years.
