Today is the last day of the Lunar Year 2015, the Year of the Sheep, New Year’s Eve. Reflecting on every moment of this year, my heart is quite unsettled. Over the course of this year, my wife and I have experienced significant changes in our work, lives, and thoughts. This year has been one of our shared growth, as well as a year of transformation for us. Since the end of last lunar year, when my company decided to send me on a business trip to oversee the site, we have been preparing for this task ever since. From making sure the projects in hand are completed and put on record, to considering the difficulties my wife faces at work and the need for adjustments, to the need to have my parents help out at home, and so on. Among them, the most challenging one is my wife’s job change. After that accident, my wife’s health has not been good, and her mood has been unstable frequently. Caring for the body and mind has always been a concern for the whole family. But considering future developments, my wife also needs to change jobs. The plan to come to my company was also put on hold for other reasons. So, my wife also started submitting resumes and going for interviews online. But once it came to the interview stage, I was rejected over this very issue. A sense of frustration and disappointment pervades, hard to dispel. However, as the old saying goes, there is always a way out; with a try-it-out attitude, applying for a position in a public institution ended up succeeding. The work was adjusted smoothly, and it’s relatively a good choice. This has lifted a huge burden from our whole family, allowing us to move forward at last. Honey, you’re so amazing; I’m proud of you. Next, I just need to wait for the notification about my business trip. During this time, the useless project in hand was revised over and over again, turning into a complete mess; putting it into production was seen as a joke, and there never seemed to be any hope of it being completed. And as the business trip kept getting postponed, I was occupied while also missing out on another on-site project; my frustration is imaginable. Finally, there was definite news of a business trip in August. Once everything is settled at home, I can go on business trips to oversee the site with peace of mind. The conditions on site are indeed tough, but it’s no big deal. What tests people are the complex relationships among various parties. The interests of the property owners, management companies, supervisors, construction teams, and other parties are intricately intertwined; the slightest carelessness can lead to trouble. As a technician with limited experience, I set high standards for myself, carefully reviewing every change, communicating patiently with all parties involved, and listening more than speaking. Although there were a few minor setbacks along the way, luckily my meticulous attitude proved effective, earning recognition from all parties involved. Though there are many shortcomings, there are no careless mistakes to console oneself with. During this time, having gone through the complicated personnel issues on site as well as various problematic projects, I came to understand the intricacies and tricks involved in engineering projects; it also improved my ability to endure difficulties and analyze situations. What impressed me the most was the way of speaking to people and handling problems that I learned while observing the work on site. I think, for me, this is a treasure, a stage, an elevation. For someone in the tech industry, technology is something that one has at their disposal, yet there’s always more to learn throughout one’s life; whereas other skills such as patience, analysis, communication abilities, problem-solving skills, and organizational capabilities serve as stepping stones for progress. It has been nearly 5 years since I graduated from graduate school in 2011, and I have been working ever since. During this time, I had a few business trips that came and went, and I also experienced the ups and downs of taking sides. There have been several times of feeling anxious about gains and losses, but helplessness and powerlessness prevail in the face of reality. Fortunately, with the care and encouragement from my mentors and supervisors, and through my own persistent efforts, I have learned a lot. In my opinion, in the technology industry, 5 years is a period of accumulation, 5 to 10 years is a period of growth (in terms of performance), and after 10 years it is a period when one can achieve success. For leaders, it comes down to assessing people – determining whether they can be trained within 5 years ; Is it possible to use it for 5~10 years? ; Whether it will be available in 10 years. Therefore, at each stage it is necessary to strive to do one’s duties well, and only when there is extra capacity should one proceed to analyze and summarize.
