For the alcohol plants we have worked on, where high cleanliness standards are required, we use 304 steel; for the rest, we use grade 20 steel

For alcohol produced by fermentation, materials in contact with the alcohol are usually made of 304 material. When 201 material is used for pipes that are frequently opened and closed, the pipes tend to corrode, and metal ion impurities can dissolve into the liquid phase; in severe cases, the color of the alcohol solution may change. For alcohol synthesized using industrial methods, it is necessary to consider the presence of impurities; in most cases, 316L material is required for those in liquid contact, while 304 is sufficient for alcohol in gas phase. Recovery devices for alcohol extracts used in pharmaceutical extraction often contain a high level of chloride ions; it is advisable to use 2205 material for the liquid phase. In cases with high chloride ion concentrations, 304 material is likely to withstand the conditions only for a few months.
