Select an appropriate capacity for the steam trap based on the pressure difference across it and the amount of condensate discharged: The capacity of a steam trap is determined by multiplying the capacity of the steam-using equipment (i.e., the steam consumption) by a safety factor (generally, a safety factor of more than 2 is required for float-type steam traps, while a factor of more than 3 is necessary for other types of steam traps). The correct selection takes four parameters into account: operating pressure (pressure rating), pressure difference, water flow rate, and back pressure.
