I have a question about the flowchart. For pipeline materials that need to be cooled, is insulation still necessary for the pipeline? For example, the overhead product from a distillation tower. It is supposed to be cooled; why does it still need to be kept warm after coming out?
There is no need for heat protection; systems that use circulating water for cooling do not require insulation. However, if cooling is used to heat another medium, then insulation is necessary.
It needs to be cooled down – how high is the temperature? This insulation is supposed to provide heat protection.
No insulation is needed; it might be to prevent scalding, but there’s no need to cover it completely.
I think it mainly depends on the medium properties and process requirements. If no changes such as condensation or crystallization occur after cooling, or if there is no lower limit for the temperature after cooling, insulation is not necessary. If the aforementioned changes do occur or if there is a lower limit for the cooling temperature, then insulation is required even though cooling is necessary
This insulation may also serve to maintain operational stability, as rain has a significant impact on the temperature of the tower
Pure cooling is not required; heat insulation is needed when heat exchange with other media takes place. Some areas that can be touched by people are insulated locally to prevent burns.
Personally, I think pipes mainly serve the purpose of transportation; heat exchange and cooling of materials are carried out more often in containers and other equipment. One reason is that it’s easier to manage and control such processes, and another reason is that it’s easier to recover heat in this way
I agree with you; pipeline cooling is difficult to control
Insulation against heat loss is actually a form of thermal insulation as well, only with higher requirements, such as stricter airtightness standards

The temperature of the output from the top of a distillation tower is definitely negative; the outside temperature is negative for several days at a time. If no insulation is used, it’s not the external environment that heats it. There’s also the advantage of low cost and ease of use.
