We have a total of three steam generators connected in parallel in our catalytic slurry system. During each switching process, steam leakage often occurs at the heat exchanger tube banks and floating heads. Each time the system is put into operation, we follow the procedure of first supplying steam to warm the equipment, then introducing water vapor, and finally adding the slurry gradually; yet leaks still occur. Please discuss whether there are better procedures for starting up the system, what else needs to be taken into account, and how to avoid leaks during the operation of the heat exchangers
Do you use butterfly springs when reinstalling the floating head of your heat exchanger? You can give it a try; it should work well
Have you installed disc springs? We have, but there is still leakage; however, it occurs less frequently than before

Disc springs are a good solution; when installing the heat exchanger, it’s necessary to proceed slowly, tightening it as it’s being installed. If there’s still leakage after using disc springs, is there any other good solution?

Leakages often occur when high-temperature heavy oil heat exchangers such as slurry heat exchangers are switched in or out of service; this has happened to us during operations. Apart from using shock springs, there is no better solution, and even shock springs cannot completely prevent leaks. The most fundamental thing is to control the heating rate and pressure increase rate, and to tighten it as needed.
