In our plant, we use two identical packed towers for distillation reactions; the first one is used for dehydration, and the second one for distillation. However, the light components from the top of the dehydration tower and those from the top of the distillation tower end up mixing together. I don’t understand what the purpose of having the first dehydration tower is then

Of course it’s useful. If the feed contains water along with components with a lower boiling point, then during distillation these light components will boil together with the water, which affects the dry point of those light components

No, and the light components coming from the tops of the dehydration tower and the distillation tower end up being combined together
