What kind of fluid media can only be evaporated using multi-effect evaporation and not MVR evaporation?
Wastewater solutions containing high amounts of ammonium chloride are treated by evaporation and crystallization; the boiling point of such ammonium chloride solutions rises significantly, to 18 degrees, and it is difficult for ordinary compressors to achieve such a temperature rise, making separation challenging. Furthermore, there is no absolute distinction between MVR and multi-effect systems; the difference lies mainly in energy savings. The following two factors generally rule out the use of MVR: 1. A high boiling point elevation – considering a heat transfer temperature difference of 6–8 degrees, the boiling point elevation should not exceed 16 degrees, with a maximum pressure ratio of 2.2. 2. The cost of steam as a by-product is very low; in such cases, MVR is not economical (typically, 40 kWh of electricity is required to evaporate one ton of water).
