In chemical processing, buffer tanks are often used for process buffering or pressure balancing. There doesn’t seem to be a strict definition for this; vertical types take up less space, and I’ve seen buffer tanks for both gases and liquids. However, with horizontal liquid storage tanks, it is easier to control the liquid level, as there are no large fluctuations. If it has sedimentation stratification properties, it seems it would also be made into a horizontal storage tank.

No. Different forms are selected based on the roles and processes of gases and fluids.
It doesn’t matter; for gases, horizontal tanks are more common. Horizontal tanks are shorter, which makes it easier for people to get in and out of them. The largest gas buffer tank is the gas holder, and it is vertical in design. As for liquids, there’s no need to say more – the large tanks in the tank farm are all vertical, and the part at the bottom of the towers also contains liquid, and it is as well vertical. Vapor-liquid separation tanks equipped with centrifugal separators are vertical; there are also many vertical liquid storage tanks that are not constrained by a frame platform.
