There is HCl gas in toluene, so carbon steel cannot be used; therefore, I was wondering if fiberglass pipes can be employed? I’m afraid static electricity will be generated and there’s no way to discharge it
It is best not to use fiberglass-reinforced plastic pipes for organic substances, as they are made of FPR/PVC materials that will dissolve to some extent. Carbon steel pipes lined with tetrafluoroethylene can be considered, as this prevents corrosion; moreover, toluene has low corrosivity. If the hydrogen chloride gas concentration is low, stainless steel pipes can be used, as they possess a certain degree of corrosion resistance.
Why does it dissolve? Is the pipe being dissolved by toluene? The owner is concerned about costs and doesn’t want to use PTFE... They suggested fiberglass, but I’m worried about static electricity
Toluene can dissolve PVC; one can’t just focus on what the owner wants. If nothing else works, consider PP pipes
PP is also a plastic pipe; what about static electricity? Toluene is flammable
As long as the toluene flow rate is properly controlled to be no more than 2 m/s – that is, the maximum flow rate is equal to the square root of the pipe diameter multiplied by 0.8 – there should be no safety issues. Otherwise, consider stainless steel pipes; there will be no problems as long as there is proper safe grounding.
So, if my diameter is 50, the reciprocal of 50 is 0.02; the square root of 0.02 is 0.14, and 0.14 * 0.8 = 0.112 m/s?
