What level of leakage from the packing gland in a reciprocating compressor when it is shut down is considered normal? At 9:18, the pressure in the hydrogen pipeline system was 1.760 MPA; by 10:37 it had dropped to 0.798 MPA. Is the pressure dropping too quickly? During the pressure holding period, a sound of gas passing can be clearly heard from the air leakage collection tank.
It is related to the compressor used; imported compressors are different from domestic ones. There are also differences among the manufacturers of imported compressors, such as ARIEL, COOPER, GEMINI, IMW, SAFE, LMF, and NUOVOPIGEON – each manufacturer has its own standards. Domestic compressors, on the other hand, are generally similar to each other. You need to inform the manufacturer of the device. According to the above, the leakage amount is relatively high.
If the packing has been in use for some time, it is necessary to check whether it is severely worn. If it is new packing that has just been installed, then the following needs to be analyzed: 1) whether there are any issues with the installation, 2) whether there are problems with the material and manufacturing quality of the packing itself, 3) whether the wear on the piston rod falls within the limits specified by the compressor manufacturer; if it exceeds these limits, the piston rod must be replaced.

The packing itself constitutes a dynamic seal, and leakage when it is at rest is normal. It’s possible that due to prolonged use, the wear has become severe, which results in higher leakage levels. One can observe the situation while the equipment is operating normally; if the sealing performance is good, then there is no problem.
