Is the return line of a reciprocating compressor installed at the time of manufacturing, or does the design team have to install this line separately?
Small, basically pre-assembled by the manufacturer. . .
It can be designed by the manufacturer or supplied by the owner themselves, depending on the design requirements
For larger machines, it’s better to install the pipes and valves by oneself, as that gives more peace of mind.
The items that come as part of the set need to be carefully inspected; some welds are not properly sealed, which often results in leaks. A few years ago, similar weld issues led to an emergency shutdown
The diameter and length are determined by the design institute based on the parameters provided by the manufacturer regarding the compressor’s flow rate, pressure, power, etc
Regarding return lines, for smaller types of units, the manufacturers usually handle their installation; for larger systems, it is necessary for a design institute to create a detailed plan for the pipeline layout, with the owner carrying out the construction themselves. One thing that needs to be clear is that, whether large or small, all pipe sizes and specifications are determined by the compressor manufacturer based on the flow rate and pressure drop; it is merely the design institute that adjusts these specifications to create the layout for the actual site.
Generally, if a manufacturer has the capability to design pipelines, the return pipelines are designed by that manufacturer. If there are special requirements from the design institute, the pipelines may be designed by them as well. The circuit pipelines for skid-mounted units are usually prepared by the manufacturer before shipment. If other units wish, they can request that the manufacturer pre-fabricate the pipelines before shipment; however, pre-fabricated pipelines generally need to be modified upon arrival at the site, so this approach is not recommended.
