The function of the water seal tank is to prevent flashback from occurring. In the event of flashback, the flame enters the water seal tank through the flare gas outlet; since the inlet pipe is below the water surface, this prevents the flame from spreading further.

Negative pressure water seal: When the pressure inside the tank is too low (lower than the height of the water column in the water seal), a certain amount of air is introduced through the water seal to prevent the tank from being damaged due to excessive negative pressure.

It acts like a safety valve. When the pressure inside the tank is too low (lower than the height of the water column in the water seal), the water seal is broken to allow some air to enter, thereby preventing damage to the tank due to excessive negative pressure.
