We need to purchase air compressors now. The supplier recommends that we buy 4 units, with 3 in use and 1 as a spare. What are the advantages of this? Our current gas consumption varies greatly

Does one backup mean not loading it? Is it still in cold standby? It can be set to a cold standby mode, meaning that the backup compressor is shut down, and it starts working only when the pressure drops to the set point at which it needs to be activated. It won’t consume much electricity.
