The size of the clearance volume must be determined based on the specific conditions of each compressor. With a constant stroke volume, the larger the clearance volume, the smaller the actual exhaust volume, and the shaft power will decrease. Conversely, the smaller the clearance volume, the larger the exhaust volume, and the shaft power will increase. The size of the clearance volume should be determined by balancing the exhaust volume and shaft power. Generally, the larger the displacement of a compressor, the smaller the relative clearance should be. If the displacement is small, the relative clearance will be high. What is mentioned here is the relative clearance, not the clearance volume mentioned earlier; these are two different concepts that should not be confused.
What you are referring to is probably the piston’s end clearance, not the clearance volume.
Generally, the relative clearance volume is specified in the manual. Once the compressor is manufactured, the clearance volume is fixed; unless the compressor’s structure is changed, this volume cannot be adjusted.
