HF production: I worked in the control room of the HF production facility for two months. This month, due to my own carelessness in monitoring the displays, there were two incidents: once the elevator got stuck for 3 hours; another time, although the SICK scale showed normal values both for the cumulative amount and the instantaneous value, the pneumatic valve for discharging material did not open, as a result of which no material was discharged from the SICK scale. This led to 8 tons of acid being poured into the furnace. I don’t know what’s happening to me; there’s this strange feeling, and it happens every time. I’m seeking advice regarding a concern deep in my heart – what’s going on? Is it because I’m not careful enough, or what?

Obviously, the focus isn’t on safety; the fluorine chemical industry is fairly safe, and the worst that can happen is some venting of gas – which can be prevented if dealt with promptly； If the owner of the petrochemical plant maintained such a mental state, they would have collapsed long ago: There are no trivial matters in the petrochemical industry; the owner needs to pull themselves together as soon as possible. If they can’t do that, they should take some time off to relax~~~
For an experienced control room operator, situations such as pneumatic valves not functioning and resulting in severe imbalances in the mixture can be detected from various aspects. One should not rely too much on instruments; instead, one should trust their own judgment. If no fluorite powder is added, does that mean that the reaction reactor, scrubber tower, and condenser are not responding? It was still 8 tons more. What does 8 tons even mean? With a furnace that’s 3.5 meters long, it will take almost an hour as well! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
The poster is right; it takes about 1 hour for the current in the reactor to decrease, the efficiency of the scrubber and condenser improves, and the production volume drops significantly, among other phenomena. Due to lack of experience, it wasn’t detected in time.
Working with hydrogen fluoride requires careful observation and thorough consideration; it might be a problem with the furnace that could lead to serious issues in the distillation system and the exhaust gas system. This process is highly interdependent – one problem can trigger many others. It’s necessary to view the entire process as a whole rather than focusing on just one system. One must understand thoroughly the working principles of each system, as well as the reaction mechanisms of the materials involved. By checking the parameters on the DCS, it’s possible to immediately determine the current status of the system and any existing problems. However, this requires years of experience to develop.
