The impact of alkalinity on wastewater treatment

Alkalinity in wastewater refers to the total amount of substances in water that can react quantitatively with strong acids. The main components of alkalinity in wastewater include carbonates, bicarbonates, and hydroxides. It is often used to assess the buffering capacity of water bodies, as well as the solubility and toxicity of metals in them, and serves as an indicator for controlling water and wastewater treatment processes. In the secondary sedimentation tank, on one hand, there is also some acidity generated by nitrification reactions, which requires a certain level of alkalinity in the tank to neutralize. On the other hand, the environment in the secondary sedimentation tank is mainly anaerobic or hypoxic, and some sludge may undergo hydrolytic acidification, producing organic acids; if a sufficient level of alkalinity is not maintained in the water, its quality will definitely deteriorate, making it necessary to keep the alkalinity at an appropriate level in this tank. Finally, since the secondary sedimentation tank is often used as the final stage in water treatment, monitoring its alkalinity has a direct impact on the quality of the treated water, hence it is very important to keep track of its alkalinity levels.
