A newcomer is asking the seniors here why a reducer is installed in a cooling tower, and why the fan needs to have its speed reduced. Since it seems that our company’s cooling towers don’t have this installed, I wanted to ask what problems might arise if it isn’t installed. The reducer is supposed to allow the fan to operate at a lower speed in winter, thereby enabling the target temperature to be reached – it’s a form of energy-saving measure
It may be related to the motor speed, as well as to centrifugal force.
If the speed of the cooling tower fan is too high, the fan blades can spin out of control. The speed of the motor cannot be set too low, otherwise it will result in high costs and a large size, making it unsuitable for use on-site. A reducer is used to reduce the fan’s speed to a level that it can handle without being damaged. The cost of a reducer is lower than that of a low-speed motor, and it also takes up less space.
In typical cooling tower systems, the motor speed is less than 1000 revolutions per minute; after passing through a reducer, the fan speed is generally 165 revolutions per minute, 210 revolutions per minute, or 250 revolutions per minute. The lower fan speed is mainly related to the material of the fan blades, the efficiency of air capture, and rotor balance~~

I think that for large cooling towers, the fan blades have a larger radius. The speed at the outer edge of the blade is high. Higher speeds require higher demands for dynamic balance. Otherwise, the vibration will be too intense for the structure to withstand.
