The direct effect is cooling, but this cooling is intended to reduce the inlet air temperature at the start of the subsequent compression stages, thereby reducing the energy required. If the inlet air temperature is too high, it will cause the temperature of the entire cylinder liner and packing to rise; such high temperatures are detrimental during long-duration operations. When the temperature is reduced, the density of the gas increases while its volume decreases; only then can the compressor achieve an adequate pumping capacity. It is normal for the compressor’s load not to increase if the cooling effect is insufficient
