Shaanxi has a long and rich literary history; its profound cultural heritage has provided Shaanxi’s contemporary writers with invaluable literary insights. The dual emphasis on literature and social service shares the same roots, and this represents the common literary mindset among Shaanxi’s contemporary writers. Their literary dreams and strong sense of mission kept them unshaken by fame or fortune, unaffected by the times; they were willing to endure hardship, remaining calm in good times and striving persistently in difficult ones. They were devoted to literature throughout their lives. (Feng Xiaohua’s Chinese) Liu Qing was one of the most important writers in the thirty years following the founding of the People’s Republic of China. His work \"The History of Entrepreneurship\" provides a profound account of the tremendous changes that took place in the rural areas during that era. His approach to writing, which focused on people’s livelihoods and reality, had a profound impact on writers in New China.
Chen Zhongshi, who passed away not long ago, began publishing his works in 1965. His novel \"The White Deer Plain\" is his masterpiece; it won the 4th Mao Dun Literature Prize and has been translated into various languages. The work “Trust” won the National Short Story Award in 1979, while “The Wei North Plateau: Memories of a Man” received the National Reportage Literature Award for 1990–1991.
Lu Yao is the first writer from Shaanxi to win the Mao Dun Literature Prize. Lu Yao’s novels are mostly set in rural areas, depicting the people and events that take place between the countryside and the city. \"Life\" is one of Lu Yao’s early representative works. After 1986, he successively published the novel \"The Ordinary World.\" In 1992, he fell ill due to overwork and passed away at a young age.
Jia Pingwa is a winner of the Mao Dun Literature Prize. Major works include: Impatience, The Wasteland City, White Night, Tumen, Gao Laozhuang, Missing the Wolf, Qinqiang Opera, Happiness, The Ancient Furnace, and others. It has been published in over twenty editions in languages such as English, French, German, Russian, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese. He has won numerous national literature awards, as well as the Mobil Pegasus Literature Award in the United States, the Femina Prize in France, and the Honor Award for Literature and Arts in France. In 2008, \"Qin Opera\" won the 7th Mao Dun Literature Prize. In 2011, The Ancient Furnace won the Shi Nai’an Novel Award. In 2013, she was awarded the Knight of the Order of the Golden Palm for Literature and Arts by the French Embassy.
Ye Guangqin is from Beijing and is of Manchu ethnicity. His major works include novels such as \"War Orphans\", \"Be Alert for Bears\", \"Picking Mulberries\", \"Family Portrait\", and \"The Matchmaker Who Became a Scholar\". He has also written novels set in Shaanxi, including \"The Old County Town\" and \"Qingmuchuan\"; the latter was adapted into the TV series \"A Great Hero\", which attracted widespread attention.
Gao Jianqun is hailed as the “last knight” of romanticist literature; he is a rare writer in Chinese literature who possesses a sense of nobility and idealism. His major works include \"The Last Hun\", \"Liu Liu Zhen\", \"Secrets of the Ancient Paths\", \"The Knight with a Worried Expression\", \"The Distant White House\", \"Da Shun Dian\", \"Legends of Horses, Wind, and the Desert\", and \"The Vast Plains\", among others. His novel \"The Last Xiongnu\" caused a sensation in the Chinese literary world, with sales exceeding 1 million copies. He is considered one of the \"three key figures\" of the \"Shaanxi Literary Movement\", along with Chen Zhongshi and Jia Pingwa. In 2011, the TV series \"Panlong Wohu Gao Shan Ding\", based on \"The Last Xiongnu\", was broadcast on CCTV and later aired on various satellite channels as well. The novel \"The Great Plains\" won the \"Five Ones\" Outstanding Book Award from the Publicity Department of the CPC.
Yang Zhengguang, writer and screenwriter. Born in Shaanxi Province in 1957, he graduated from the Department of Chinese Language and Literature at Shandong University in 1982. He has been engaged in writing poetry, novels, and scripts for a long time. He is the author of novels such as \"Tusheng,\" \"Nan Niao,\" \"Laodan Is a Tree,\" \"Black Landscape,\" \"The Coffin Shop,\" and \"Starting from Two Eggs.\" He served as the screenwriter for the film \"The Swordsman of Shuangqi Town,\" was one of the screenwriters for the TV series \"Water Margin,\" and acted as the chief planner for \"Years of Passion.\"
Hong Ke was born in 1962 in a rural area of Guanzhong, Shaanxi. He graduated from university in 1985; he first lived in Kuitun, Xinjiang, and later in the small city of Baoji. Currently, he teaches at Shaanxi Normal University and is the vice president of the Shaanxi Writers Association. He spent ten years wandering in the Tianshan Mountains. His major works include the novel series \"Tianshan – Silk Road\", such as \"The Rider Going West\", \"The Great River\", \"Wuerhe\", \"The Tree of Life\", and \"The Storm over Karabu\"; as well as collections of short and medium-length stories like \"The Beautiful Sheep\", \"Riding Through the Tianshan Mountains\", \"The Golden Grasslands\", \"The Sun Takes Root\", \"Moheyan\", and \"Waves of the Irtysh River\". He has also written humorous and absurd novels totaling 6 million words, including \"A Dou\", \"It’s Hard to Be a Good Person\", and \"Hundreds of Birds Pay Homage to the Phoenix\". He has won the Feng Mu Literature Award, Lu Xun Literature Award, Zhuang Zhongwen Literature Award, the Novel Prize awarded by the Chinese Fiction Society, and the Shaanxi Province Arts and Literature Award, among others.
