After carbon deposition occurred in the dry gas hydrogen production converter, the outlet temperature rose sharply; increasing the water-to-carbon ratio had no significant effect. Later, when a small amount of hydrogen was added to the feed material, the carbon deposition disappeared and the outlet temperature dropped sharply. The olefin content in the feed material was within acceptable limits. What caused the disappearance of the carbon deposition?
The main reason is probably that the water-to-carbon ratio is too low; to be more precise, it’s whether the components in it remain constant!
There’s no change; some people wonder if suddenly a stream of olefins entered the converter and caused cracking?

It shouldn’t happen. An increase in furnace temperature could be due to some change inside the furnace tubes, or it might be because more natural gas is being burned. When the water-to-carbon ratio is high enough, carbon deposition generally does not occur instantly, unless the conversion gas is not natural gas!
Instant carbon deposition is usually caused by an excessively low water-to-carbon ratio and the decomposition of methane. However, in your case it seems that water vapor oxidized the catalyst; after hydrogen was introduced, the catalyst was reduced and regained its activity, which is why the temperature dropped.
