What size should the accident pool in a liquid chlorine tank storage area be? Are there specific requirements specified in any standards?
I’m not entirely sure about the specific regulatory requirements, but the planar dimensions of our caustic soda tank for accidents are not very large; however, its depth is quite significant. We produce 750,000 tons of ion-exchange membrane caustic soda per year.
The size of this alkaline tank for such an accident must be sufficient to hold a dilute alkaline solution capable of absorbing 1 ton of chlorine gas; you can do the calculations yourself. The area doesn’t need to be very large, but depth is essential. We used to have an alkali tank, but it was never used; in the new design it was removed. As a measure for emergency safety response, I think it is necessary – it’s sufficient to calculate the absorption capacity of one steel cylinder. It serves a similar purpose in case of accidents, so please consider this option.
