Dear colleagues, I have a question I’d like to ask. For the low-temperature pumps used in the ethylene plants or the olefin separation units of MTO systems – those pumps that handle light hydrocarbon fluids – how are they tested individually during equipment testing? During single tests, the conditions required for the process medium are not met; for example, when using water, its high density requires throttling to prevent the motor from overloading. Additionally, if a low-temperature pump fails to clean effectively, it has a significant impact on the progress of drying during the preliminary testing phase. I’ve seen many sources say that methanol should be used for testing, but how exactly is the testing carried out? I’ve never seen it before; a large container is required on site along with piping. Could someone who is involved in construction or production give some advice?

The individual testing of this pump is carried out using a working medium (or methanol). First, the liquid is placed in a container that has been prepared (the container is roughly funnel-shaped and can be made by oneself); the pump’s inlet is connected to the funnel-shaped opening at the bottom of the container, while the pump’s outlet is connected to a temporarily constructed pipeline placed at the top of the container. In this way, the pump can operate in a cyclic manner.

I have been involved in the commissioning of olefin separation units, MTBE unit pumps, as well as in preparing plans and providing on-site supervision
