China’s coal chemical industry is in rapid development. Whether it is the modern coal chemical processes that are currently thriving, such as coal-to-gas, coal-to-oil, coal-to-olefins, coal-to-ethylene glycol, and coal-to-aromatics, or the traditional ammonia production industry for nitrogen fertilizers, coal chemicals play a vital role in China’s chemical industry. In particular, modern coal chemical processes have become increasingly important as part of China’s energy strategy over the past decade. Although some large state-owned enterprises have failed in their attempts to engage in coal chemical production, such as Datang Power, they have still made valuable efforts and contributions to exploring the possibility of using coal chemicals to replace petrochemicals; their efforts, though unsuccessful, are still noteworthy. China’s coal chemical industry technology has also risen to the top of the world thanks to strong support and attention given to it. Equipment and technologies that used to need to be imported are now mostly domestically produced. In particular, in terms of the core gasification technology, a range of gasification methods has been developed, including those based on fly ash as well as slurry coal methods, such as the Aerospace Furnace, Tsinghua Furnace, Wuhuan Furnace, Dongfang Furnace, and Ningdong Furnace – methods suitable for different coal chemical products and various types of coal found in different regions. China’s coal chemical industry is now at a critical stage: technologies related to gasification, low-temperature methanol washing, methanation, direct and indirect oil synthesis, as well as wastewater treatment, are all highly mature. Meanwhile, many experts and scholars continue to work on further improvements, leading to the development of coal chemical processes that are cheaper and require fewer steps. However, gasification remains an essential step; aside from the technical aspects, process operation and the use of equipment are also crucial. Those working in China’s coal chemical industry need to communicate more, exchange ideas, and share knowledge in order to strengthen and expand this industry. Therefore, I propose establishing a WeChat discussion group where everyone can discuss the problems that arise during the production process in a timely manner, and where they can also help one another to improve.
