We are planning to purchase a 304 horizontal pipeline pump with the following specifications: head of 30 m, flow rate of 200 m3/h, inlet diameter of DN150, outlet diameter of DN125. The medium to be pumped is alkaline water; the temperature ranges from 80–100°C, and the pH level is 10. The pump should come equipped with an explosion-proof motor. The user found the previous pump troublesome to use due to the cooling water system, and wants to purchase a pump without such a system. I want to figure out: 1. Is there any difference between a pump with cooling water and one without it? 2. Will the absence of cooling water affect the pump’s lifespan? 3. If cooling water is not used, is it feasible? What aspects should be considered when purchasing?
I’m not quite sure what “cooling water” means – is it sealed cooling water? If so, this affects the seal life.
Ordinary pipeline pumps generally do not come equipped with cooling water.
Warm water should refer to cooled water. It depends on what the structure of your pump is. If a directly connected motor with an extended shaft is used, it is appropriate to employ cooling water to prevent heat transfer from the shaft, which could otherwise cause the motor bearings to overheat and get damaged. Even if it is not a motor with an extended shaft but rather uses a packing seal, cooling water is still needed to cool the packing; otherwise, excessive temperature of the packing can also lead to damage. If it is a mechanical seal, cooling water is not necessary; a hot-water seal can be used instead. When making the purchase, it is necessary to specify the operating conditions and the medium; the supplier should then select a suitable structural design as well as appropriate accessories to ensure everything works properly.
Whether cooling water is used affects the service life of the mechanical seal; Without cooling water, the service life of the mechanical seal is relatively shorter compared to when cooling water is used; everything else remains essentially unaffected ; When making the purchase, ask the pump manufacturer to take this into account; mainly, have the manufacturer consider the choice of mechanical seal
