Regarding grounding on circuit boards

Hello, dear sea friends. Today I saw markings on a circuit board indicating IGND and EGND; I asked the manufacturer, and they told me that IGND stands for Isolation Ground, while EGND stands for Earth Ground. I would like to ask when to connect IGND and when to connect EGND when wiring the instruments; what is the function of each of these two grounding connections? I would appreciate advice from fellow sailors. Thank you.
