What is a fractional condenser? Some exam questions mention that there is a condenser at the top of the tower; does this count as one theoretical plate? What is the difference between a fractional condenser and a conventional condenser?
Theoretical plate: The gas phase and liquid phase leaving a theoretical plate are in equilibrium; since the temperature of each theoretical plate varies step by step, the composition of the material leaving each plate also changes step by step. The reboiler and the demister have temperatures different from those of the other theoretical plates, and the gas and liquid phases leaving these two devices are in equilibrium, thus enabling separation. The total condenser, on the other hand, is completely different. Since it condenses all the gas phase into the liquid phase, the molar composition of the stream entering this device is identical to that of the stream exiting it. This is why the total condenser is not considered a theoretical plate.
