The workers at a leather factory run by a village have always had a fine tradition of thrift and frugality; they often take the scraps of leather from the factory home to use as fuel, thus making use of waste. This practice has been going on for a long time. Is such thrift commendable?
When leather burns, it produces gases with irritating odors (mainly carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, etc.), along with black smoke. Without exhaust gas treatment facilities, this method of disposing of such waste clearly does not meet environmental standards; it simply transforms solid waste into exhaust gas, thereby causing secondary environmental pollution. Therefore, such leather should be disposed of in a centralized manner, for example by specialized waste incineration facilities.
