What to do when there’s little work at the office

It’s been five years since I graduated with my master’s degree. I currently work in a very relaxed department in a small city in the northwest. I’m the type of person who tends to daydream a lot; I’m not particularly interested in work related to chemistry, and I really don’t know what kind of work I would like to do. I don’t have high hopes for the future. I thought about switching to a job in safety assessment, but the salary there is extremely low – around 1,500 yuan as a base salary, plus performance bonuses. So I can only stay at my current employer. If I were to leave, the salaries here are generally low anyway. My current company is able to make its loan payments each month. As for work, I don’t know what to do; I just muddle along. My supervisors don’t care either and don’t assign me any tasks. Everyone is in the same situation. I see other people who seem happy, they just surf the Internet or chat, but I can’t find joy in anything. I also don’t know where to start to improve my situation. Are there any friends who are in the same situation as me? Is there any way to get out of this state?
