The flue gas desulfurization units used by Berg Company in the United States employ sodium hydroxide for desulfurization. Can the alkali residue resulting from the use of liquefied gas, as well as the alkali residue from catalysts, be utilized to reduce the amount of fresh alkali solution needed? Could this have any negative impact on the flue gas desulfurization units?

The wastewater generated from flue gas desulfurization contains only salts, with a low COD level; it is treated as saline wastewater and does not go through the aeration or biological treatment units in the wastewater treatment plant. The alkaline slag from desulfurization of alcohols has a high COD level, so it cannot be used.
Oh, is it just COD? Are there any other reactions, or are there other pollutants that cannot be dealt with?
In addition to COD, it is necessary to consider sodium hydroxide present, as well as certain sulfur compounds and sulfides that give off unpleasant odors; these are all aspects that need attention from an environmental protection perspective.
Sodium hydroxide is used for catalyzing flue gas desulfurization; it serves to neutralize acids and regulate the pH value. There are also various forms of organic sulfur, and oil generally does not get consumed in this process.
It definitely won’t work. Just the COD value alone is a problem; the COD level of alkaline slag ranges from hundreds of thousands to millions, making it unusable. Not to mention the sulfides and such inside.
Don’t easily dismiss the original poster’s idea. 1. Regarding COD, alkaline desulfurization often results in COD levels that exceed the allowed limits. The waste liquid is not discharged directly but is sent to a wastewater treatment plant for processing; oxidation of COD is necessary there anyway. If wastewater treatment can bring the COD levels within the acceptable range, then COD becomes not an issue. 2. Drawing on the technology for desulfurization of liquefied gas without alkaline slag, the exhaust gas resulting from the regeneration of such slag is treated in conjunction with catalytic flue gas desulfurization.
The COD level of our company’s wastewater is within the acceptable range, but it still needs to be sent to the wastewater treatment plant. I’ll check further to see if this is feasible
