Friends on the forum, has anyone ever used a radar level gauge model 5400 that showed a reading of 0.39 M when the tank was empty, with an analog output of 8 MA? What can be done to get proper readings? It’s a sealed container, and the manhole was opened to confirm that it was indeed empty, with nothing inside. But the header shows that it is there. It’s quite confusing. I have checked the tank height; the range settings are correct, and I also tried turning off the power, but it still doesn’t work.
Possible reasons: The radar’s configuration sets the tank height to be 0.39 meters higher than the actual height, which causes the empty tank to show a liquid level of 0.39 meters. It is necessary to measure the actual tank height by removing the radar and determining the distance from the radar’s mounting flange to the bottom of the tank; once this value is known, it can be entered again into the radar settings. This is also the easiest solution to address. Second, there may be interference at a depth of 0.39 meters below the tank bottom, such as from mixing mechanisms or coiled tubes; this is more complicated to deal with and requires professional assistance, unless one decides to abandon measuring that depth. Third, the filtering setting might be too low; in such cases, a value of 475 can be used, or the filtering level can be increased appropriately through software

If the tank height is correct but the tank is actually empty, it indicates that there is interference at a depth of 0.39 meters, where the amplitude is highest. This can be detected using the Echo Peaks function in the 475 menu. The best way to deal with this issue is to use the Rosemount Radar Master software to analyze the waveform, which makes it easy to identify and suppress the interfering waves.
