Both the balance disk and the thrust bearing serve to counteract the axial force that is generated within the cylinder during normal operation and points toward the low-pressure side. Then why is the balance disk placed on the high-pressure side rather than the low-pressure side?
It is mainly due to considerations regarding pressure differences
Theoretically, it’s possible to install it on either end, but it can be understood that on the high-pressure side, the side under stress is the machine body side, which is generally machined into shape and thus relatively stable. If it is installed on the low-pressure side, the stressed side is on the outside of the housing; it generally needs to be secured with bolts, which introduces issues related to installation accuracy. Moreover, the strength is high, and there are many factors that can influence it.
As I understand it, the balance disc is located on the low-pressure side; the high-pressure process gas supplied through the balance tube acts on this disc, generating a force that counteracts the axial force acting from the high-pressure side to the low-pressure side, thereby canceling out that axial force. If a balance disc is added and placed on the high-pressure side, what is then its working mechanism?
The balance disc does not necessarily have to be at the high-pressure side. According to the format from which it is transferred, many are also right in the middle. The location for pressure tapping on the balanced pipeline is related to the design.
